Get the Limited Edition Krispy Kreme Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Doughnuts

I've been such an avid fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid. I knew those turtles named after Renaissance art icons by heart and the colors they've known for: Leonardo (blue), Donatello (purple), Raphael (red) and Michelangelo (orange). I'm no stranger to the names Splinter, April O' Neil and Shredder either. All the characters I've mentioned above made my childhood memorable and special. So when I've heard that Krispy Kreme releases a limited edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles special doughnuts which had my favorite cartoon characters on them, I really got excited! Krispy Kreme in partnership with Columbia Pictures' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie launches these awesome doughnut pieces with the faces of our favorite characters: Leo, Donnie, Ralph and Mickey. Eating delicious Krispy Kreme doughnuts had never looked so cute!

I remember having figure toys as well as other memorabilia of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Too bad, some of them have been lost due to the flooding brought about by typhoon Ondoy several years ago. I'm now thirty-something but I haven't stopped being a fan of these turtles. I even had my fingernails designed with these lovable turtles. So when I got an invite to attend Krispy Kreme's special blocked screening of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' 2014 Movie, I said yes right away!

The movie was fantastic! It has a lot of action scenes right away so there was no room for dull and boring moments unlike other films I've seen. Although personally if I had a choice, I would've chosen another actress to essay the role of TV reporter April O' Neal rather than Megan Fox. She wasn't exactly a "damsel in distress" in the said film, but I still believe the role she has played was probably given more justice if it had been given to someone else. I was even surprised to see another Hollywood icon, Whoopi Goldberg in the film doing a cameo role as April's boss. Seeing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come to life on the silver screen not only has allowed me to reminisce my childhood but it had also given me the chance to re-introduce the well-loved characters of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to my beloved Kyle.

Well, Kyle basically knew who they were since I've already passed on my remaining Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys to him. He had also seen their mascot counterparts at events held by his favorite cable channel, Nickelodeon.  However, seeing these totally awesome turtles in a movie was something new to him. Kyle began to understand each turtle's backstory, how they got these superpowers, their mutation, who had saved them and their connection with TV reporter April O' Neal. He even had his own favorite turtle now--Kyle loved Donatello for his brilliance on gadgets and anything techie related. For me, I had always been a Mickey fan for he's the one responsible for bringing the house down each time with amazing punchlines and he's the funniest/naughtiest of them all.

Kyle and I went home that night filled with happy thoughts as we talked about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles some more such as our favorite scenes from the film etc. And it's nice to do those things as we munched on our Donatello and Raphael designed face doughnuts from Krispy Kreme's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles limited edition doughnuts.

So Mommies, what are you waiting for? Get those cute Krispy Kreme Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doughnuts now while they last. Krispy Kreme TMNT Doughnuts will only be available for a limited time, so you guys better be hurry before they're gone! Don't worry about it being colored green and all. Krispy Kreme's TMNT Doughnuts had that same sweetness of Krispy Kreme's Original Glazed doughnuts but with a few distinction--it had that crispy candy-icing on top (from the TMNT mask) which made eating Krispy Kreme's TMNT Doughnuts even more exciting and fun for kids and those kids-at-heart to eat!

Grab those Krispy Kreme TMNT Doughnut boxes now at your favorite Krispy Kreme store before they're gone and be ready to scream for Cowabunga!

Xoxo,

Bundongtam Food Review: Healthy and Authentic Vietnamese Restaurant in Malate, Manila

It was such a humid afternoon but my good friend Aileen and I braved the heavy traffic going to Manila on a Thursday. Aileen had been searching for hole-in-the-wall restaurants that serves authentic Vietnamese cuisine. She had been looking for one ever since her foodie twin sister Abby went to Vietnam. Of course, there are quite a few popular restaurants that feature Vietnamese cuisine on their menu but we find them pretty expensive for a typical Filipino budget. So off we went to this little Vietnamese kitchen in Malate (just beside Benilde Hotel, a few blocks from St. Scholastica's College in Leon Guinto, Manila) called Bundongtam.

Bundongtam had very simple interiors--pastel blue walls decorated with three Vietnamese calligraphy Tin, Dong and Tam (which means Unity) as well as a painting of the Saigon Notre Dame Basilica in Vietnam. There were also bright and colorful red paper lanterns adorning the ceiling by the stairs. I believe that people would flock this quaint little Vietnamese restaurant simply because they'd want to eat authentic Viet food and not so much for the ambiance.

Being a Pho aficionado, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to finding a good Pho. They're priced right, Php 129 for a small bowl and they are not skimp on the meat or the sides...especially since I love adding the chili peppers, sprouts & mint to my soup. Bundongtam's pho broth (both chicken and beef) has that truly authentic flavor, with hints of clove and star anise really shining through! Pho is my test of all Vietnamese eateries, and they have it going on! Steaming bowls inviting you to slurp sip after sip until your stomach aches! The soup is hot when it's served and there is enough flavor where I don't have to add fish sauce for extra flavor. It is very good and the portion is not skimpy on ingredients. Overall...must try if you love Pho.

I was about to utter the words "yummy" but I remember reading somewhere that in Vietnam. You could say, 'yum', but never 'yummy' because in Vietnamese it means "horny". So instead of saying such forbidden word, I'd have to say that  Bundongtam's pho is Rất ngon (which in Vietnamese means very delicious!). Eating healthy Vietnamese food is like taking a tour on a school's herb garden. On each dish, you'd smell sawtooth coriander, morning glory, Asian basil etc. Some smell fishy, some smell minty and some smell just plain flavorful.

I'm hesitant to throw out the ubiquitous 5th star here because I reserve that for the creme de la creme, but Bundongtam was a welcome surprise! As a disclaimer, I may not have travelled yet to Vietnam but I do hold a high standard, especially since my best friend Abby (who studied Vietnamese cuisine during her stay on Vietnam) frequently cooks and prepares Vietnamese food for us in the office. I know how good Southeast Asian flavors are few and far between...

Bundongtam has goi cuon or better known as spring rolls which are made to perfection. The spring roll with shredded pork and veggies were clean and crisp tasting and it is served with some fish sauce in the side for dipping.  The Nuoc Cham dipping sauce make them even superb! The crepe to begin which was crunchy and not too oily. Wrapped in some lettuce with a touch of sauce was the way to go. They weren't too greasy as some Vietnamese crepes can be.  Plus they are reasonably priced at Php50 per order of three pieces.

Their Bun Thit Nu'ong was also quite delicious and sweet. Made from vermicelli noodles with spring roll, and char-grilled marinated pork. Their peanut sauce was divine. The only real downside was their pork. They were a bit hard for chewing. It had some resistance and was difficult to bite. We were later informed that the one in-charge during our visit was a Filipino cook and not the Vietnamese guy. So that explains why the quality wasn't properly maintained. But other than that, dining at Bundongtam was such a pleasant experience!

Our server, whom I called Manang, was very friendly, she made our experience even better. Overall, if you're looking for no frills authentic Vietnamese food for a price that's unbeatable, stop by Bundongtam, I promise you won't be disappointed!

The restaurant has a nice ambiance and the service is good. The food service is quick and food hot as it should be. The menu is filled with variety and does have a few items that are traditional to the Vietnamese culture. The menu includes the usual specials that restaurants have.

Since Bundongtam had just started their operation around three months ago, the items in the menu include only a few of Vietnam's popular foods. There are the "Chopstick Adventures" which has different beef based pho broths as well as chicken based broths for those who enjoy a lighter soup. There are too many to name but if you want variety it's there for your choosing. For "Plate Pioneers", there is also vermicelli, and rice dishes for a more hearty meal. The meats are the usual beef, pork, or chicken. I have yet to try the rest of their menu but I plan to. I wish that in the future they'll have a selection of sandwiches (Banh mi) with pork, beef, or chicken sandwiches served with pickled veggies to add to the wonderful Bundongtam menu.

Aileen and I both love Bundongtam's Authentic Vietnamese Coffee. Very subtle flavor and not too sweet but very aromatic. As far as my experience goes, it's pretty good. As far as my pho goes, it's very hearty and served hot! If you're not used to eating very warm soups let it cool a bit before chowing down. The broth was aromatic and has a nice tint for a beef broth. The broth is nice but a bit on the sweet side. So be weary of adding extra hoisin sauce for flavoring unless you like it sweet.

Only thing I find a little bad was the parking. I know it's not the restaurant's fault but watch out for those tight spaces and bad drivers out there. Over all, the restaurant has potential to be frequented. The price is reasonable and not over priced. Oh, and how I wish there was traditional Vietnamese music played in the back ground so it could've added to my nostalgia. Happy Eats everyone!

Visit this hole-in-the-wall little Vietnamese kitchen called Bundongtam at 1059 Estrada Street, corner Arellano Avenue, Malate, Manila.
Store Hours: 10-AM-8PM
Mondays-Saturdays

P.S. According to the owners, they will soon be opening near Guadalupe Mall. So I think Makati residents should watch out for that! It's another good news indeed for foodies!

Clara Ole Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce, Béchamel White Sauce and Carbonara Pasta Sauce Product Review

I'm fond of eating pasta dish of any kind--be it pesto, carbonara, puttanesca, parmigiana, pasta negra spaghetti (made from black squid ink) or even a simple aglio olio---I would really put off anything at the drop of a hat just to have any of these awesome pasta dishes. Ever since I've learned how to cook, I've always relied on one brand of pasta sauce, Clara Ole. What is it about Clara Ole sauce that's made me stick to the brand? It's very affordable yet you can be assured it's made of high quality. The richness and flavor of its sauce are easily absorbed by the pasta no matter how al dente your pasta is. And now that Clara Ole introduces three new sauces in the market namely: Tomato, Béchamel and Carbonara Sauce, I'm even more excited to create not just pasta dishes but experiment using them in other dishes as well. So when I was tapped to do a product review for Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce, Béchamel White Sauce and Carbonara Pasta Sauce, I was glad to be chosen!

Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce, Béchamel White Sauce and Carbonara Pasta sauces are good kitchen staples because you can do a whole lot of recipes with them. Be it a viand or a pasta dish, you can really whip up anything with these three new amazing sauces from Clara Ole. With renowned company SySu as its manufacturer and distributor, you can be assured that it went through stringent process before it went straight into its packaging. The result? High-quality products which help you create wonders in the kitchen. For those who do not know exactly what béchamel sauce is all about, béchamel is basically a rich white sauce made with milk infused with other herbs and flavorings.

It's time to review each Clara Ole products: Let's start with the most basic, Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene which was proven to prevent cancer. Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato pasta sauce has a rich consistency which I love. True to its name, it is creamy. Its thick red sauce was seasoned with herbs to perfection. It goes well with almost anything I fancy in the kitchen. Whatever dish I tried to whip with it, my family will certainly love it.  Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce wasn't bland but at the same time it does not taste sour unlike other tomato sauces I've previously used.

I've made Fusilli Chili Pasta and incorporated Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce along with cayenne pepper, ground beef and some real red hot chili for an added kick.  I've also experimented a bit using Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce on a simple spaghetti pasta but with a twist--I've put on those orange crab fat and a dash of tikka masala with paprika and then further squeezed some lime. Oh, who'd be clever to think that tikka masala + crab fat + Clara Ole's Creamy Tomato Pasta Sauce+ lime= an amazing dish that would make one crave for more?

There's nothing nicer than the flavor of tomatoes. What makes cooking with Clara Ole Pasta sauces are the convenience it brings. It saves you time and trouble from preparing the dish but still not sacrificing its taste. So you can do as much as you can sans all the hassle while the pasta is cooking. No long hours to wait, your guests or family will surely enjoy your dish in no time!

Clara Ole Béchamel White Sauce on the other hand also tastes yummy as I've had expected it to be. Béchamel for those who aren't familiar with culinary terms is a standard white sauce and considered one of the five "mother sauces" of classical Italian cuisine. Sorry for my very "culinary terms", but in a simple layman's term, it means it is the starting point for making other small sauces--all of which are based on Béchamel.

Cream sauce, Mornay Sauce, Soubise sauce, Nantua sauce, Cheddar Cheese sauce and Mustard sauce all had Béchamel based sauces. A traditional Béchamel is made by whisking hot milk into a simple flour-butter roux. The sauce is then simmered with shallots, cloves and nutmeg until it's creamy and velvety smooth.

And instead of typically starting my Béchamel sauce from the scratch, it's such a relief to pour in a ready Clara Ole  Béchamel White Sauce straight from the pouch onto the pan. Its got the same taste and it's so easy to cook! I love savoring the creamy blend of butter, cream and cheese on Clara Ole Béchamel White Sauce. Who would've thought I could cook gourmet meals in half a time? Only Clara Ole Quality Sauces could help me accomplish such!

As if those two Clara Ole Quality Cream-Based Sauces aren't enough, Clara Ole also introduces Clara Ole Carbonara Pasta Sauce. With heartwarming flavors of cream, salty and smoked bacon and the richness of cheese mixed in all together in one pack. Instead of whisking egg yolks, eggs, cream, bacon bits and parmesan altogether, Clara Ole Quality Sauces made our lives in the kitchen truly easier and more convenient.

I've used Clara Ole Carbonara Pasta Sauce on my deconstructed version of everyone's favorite Carbonara. I've made a deconstructed one where the egg is cooked sous vide and topped on a parmesan frio cup instead of adding to the sauce. For finish, I've added a crisp bacon wafer on top to make the dish more delectable.

With this trifecta of amazing sauces from Clara Ole Quality Cream-based Sauces, I could whip any gourmet dish anytime. Potts Point Cafe Eastwood Food Review: Restaurant for the Health-Conscious Serving Organic Foods

I grew up eating fast food meals that's why I had bloated this big (I'm not about to give away my weight though) but sometimes I think about other could've beens. What if I grew up rather eating healthier food options such as purely organic ones? I bet, I would probably be slimmer and wouldn't end up obese sans transfats, chemically-treated meats and veggies and sucrose, right? So when I got an invite from a fellow food blogger to try a posh restaurant called Potts Point Cafe in Eastwood City which serves organic foods on their menu, I immediately said yes.

Potts Point Cafe's name was derived from a place in Australia. The cafe had a chic yet cozy ambiance that will make you feel comfortable right away. Its wooden table and chairs along with displayed books and magazines on the shelf reminds me of my favorite hangout during my college days. The huge black menu boards and tiled walls on the counter added some avant garde to the said cafe.

Now, let's get down to the food. From local salads, appetizers, soups, sandwiches, main entrees, all-day breakfast menu, all the way down to their desserts and coffee--at Potts Point Cafe, they make it a point that they're all from organic sources. What do we mean when we say 'organic'? Well, it means that it does not in any way involve the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin, without any chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics or pesticides. From a foodie point of view, dining at Potts Point Cafe is simply tantamount to eating healthy.

Eggs Benedict--organic bacon and poached organic eggs with Hollandaise sauce on toasted crumpets

For their all-day breakfast menu, we've had Eggs Benedict (Php395). It's made of organic bacon and poached organic eggs with Hollandaise sauce on toasted crumpets. Potts Point Cafe's Egg Benedict is a great way to start off your day. Perfectly paired with your choice of any organic coffee from the menu board--as they claim, you'll be having "coffee without compromise".

                Iced Latte

We've also tried Strawberry Cheesecake stuffed French Toast with Whipped Cream and Palm Syrup (Php195) and Three Cheese Cheese Toast with Creamy Tomato Puree Dip (Php230).  I honestly did not expect these French toasts to be that good, simply because they're just that--French toasts. But the cheesecake stuffed complemented the strawberries on the toasts while the tomato puree dip gave the three cheese toast a tangy twist.

Three Cheese Cheese Toast with Creamy Tomato Puree Dip

Pizza aficionados would also be happy to note that Potts Point Cafe serves organic pizza as well. Made from Organic Sausage and Bacon Pizza Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette (Php275) is literally pizza and salad rolled into one. Instead of the usual tomato paste slathered on the pie dough, you'll be seeing loads of real tomatoes as well as cherry tomatoes on top of it as well as the raspberry vinaigrette. On top of the organic pizza will be green lettuces--reminding you that you're eating healthy organic foods. At Potts Point Cafe, it's so easy to forget that what you're actually eating is 'healthy organic' food because personally (and I think most people do), when one mentions the words "organic" and "healthy"--it's either the food tastes rather 'bland' or not really good. I'm glad that Potts Point Cafe was able to debunk that wrong notion about organic and healthy foods.

Organic Sausage and Bacon Pizza Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette

For entrees, we've had Seared Salmon with Dill Butter, Beet Root Puree and Creamy Mashed Potato (Php495). I find this dish a bit expensive because the seared salmon was somewhat bigger than matchbox in size. I know that pink salmon really costs a lot but I wish they'd do something to lower the price of this dish.

Seared Salmon with Dill Butter, Beet Root Puree and Creamy Mashed Potato

If there's a dish which I'd certainly recommend to friends who'd dine at Potts Point Cafe, it has to be their Vietnamese-Style Organic Slow Roast Pork Belly with Nuoc Cham (dipping sauce) on Pineapple Fried Rice (Php375). For its pice, the portion size is just right. I'm no pork fan because I've always been partial to chicken. Yet when I've had a spoonful of this dish, I'd say this Vietnamese organic slow roast pork belly will easily make me a convert! Succulent pork belly at its finest, indeed! I think this pork belly can stand on its own even without the Nuoc Cham dipping sauce, although admittedly the sauce gives it a hint of sweet and sour taste. Eating this dish is like having a circus of flavors (sweet, salty, sour and umami) on your tastebuds. I bet even those with discriminating palates will be able to appreciate and love this dish. I'm really sorry for vegetarians, but this one really tops my must-try food at Potts Point Cafe. When you dine at Potts Point Cafe, don't forget to order this dish, okay? You'll be missing a lot when you do. In fact, one of these days, I might actually find myself back to Eastwood City and go back to Potts Point Cafe because of this.

Vietnamese-Style Organic Slow Roast Pork Belly with Nuoc Cham (dipping sauce) on Pineapple Fried Rice

We have also tried Squid Ink Spaghetti with Cherry Tomatoes, Parmesan Shaves, Arugula and Fried Calamari (Php285). I also like this dish although I wouldn't recommend this on a date because the black squid ink from the dish tends to stain not only your lips but also your teeth. You certainly wouldn't want your date to look at you like you're Ursula (the villain character on Disney's Animate Film, The Little Mermaid), right? Eating this dish might be embarrassing on a first date. Give it a little more time, when you're both more comfortable on each other--then, give is dish a try. I find this dish a bit on the salty side although the mere presence of arugula tends to balance its flavor. I guess because the squid being seafood tends to have salt in itself + the parmesan shaves, makes this dish quite salty for my tastebud. Thank heavens for the inclusion of arugula leaves--aside from the rather "nutty" flavor these greens contribute to the dish, it somehow lessens its saltiness. If it had not been for its rather 'too salty' for my taste, I like this dish as well. I know pretty much how to appreciate 'pasta negra'. But my best friend Abby Baino (who almost made it to Pinoy Master Chef sometime ago) still cooks the best squid ink pasta for me. I wish that someday she'd start her own restaurant so that you guys would know I am not biased in saying this.

Potts Point Cafe's Roasted Eggplant, Cherry Tomatoes and Goat Cheese with Creamy Organic Tomato Sauce Linguine (Php275) is also worth a try. Pasta was al dente, served with two slices of crusty bread. It had that Italian style and flavor, which is a whole lot different from what most Filipino-style pasta (yes, the ones we've all grown up with--sweet with hotdogs). Italian style had that rich tomato and somewhat sour taste dashed with a few herbs.

Roasted Eggplant, Cherry Tomatoes and Goat Cheese with Creamy Organic Tomato Sauce Linguine

What you can also look forward to at Potts Point Cafe are their awesome array of desserts. We were lucky to have tried three desserts namely: Warm Caramel Walnut Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream (Php190), Strawberry, Kiwi and Mango Trifle with Light Vanilla and Custard Cookie Crumble (Php185), and the Ozzin' Ozzie Chocolate Cake Ala Mode (Php230). Among the three, I'd say I love the latter. The rich dark chocolate cake is soft on the outside with oozing chocolatey-goodness on the inside. It's like a lava cake and chocoholics will definitely enjoy the Ozzin' Ozzie Chocolate Cake Ala Mode. The Warm Carmel Walnut Pie will surely satiate those with sweet tooth. But I suggest that you share a slice with someone because a slice is good for two person. I also liked it although If I'd have to choose one, I'd still go for the Oozin' Ozzie Chocolate Cake over it. If you prefer something light, Strawberry, Kiwi and Mango Trifle with Light Vanilla and Custard Cookie Crumble is the way to go.  Served on a shot glass in a layered way, it's perfect to cap off your meal at Potts Point Cafe.

Overall, I'd have to say, Potts Point Cafe is a good place to experience organic and healthy foods. There's nothing like eating foods that are truly good for you sans any preservative. It's a nice restaurant for those who'd like to at least expand their food experience and try to be good to our bodies.

Potts Point Cafe is located at the 2nd Floor, Veranda Area of Eastwood Mall, Eastwood City, Bagumbayan, Quezon City

Special thanks to fellow food blogger, Nines Licad for the invite.
